The Business Travel Packing List That Actually Works

Business travel has a specific set of constraints that leisure travel doesn't: you need to look presentable, you're carrying tech, and you usually can't afford to wait at baggage claim when you're heading straight to a meeting.

This is the system that works for a Monday–Friday work trip, all in a carry-on.

The Bag

A 40–45 litre rolling carry-on or structured backpack works best for business travel. Rolling carry-ons look more professional in office settings; backpacks are faster in airports.

If your company culture is casual, a backpack like the Aer Travel Pack or Tumi Alpha Bravo reads fine in any meeting room. If you're in banking, law, or consulting, a rolling Rimowa or Briggs & Riley signals the expected register.

Clothing: The 5-Day Formula

The goal is five full days of professional outfits from a bag you never check.

The core wardrobe

3 dress shirts or blouses — wrinkle-resistant is essential. Luca Faloni's linen shirts wrinkle intentionally and look fine. Untuckit and Mizzen+Main make dress shirts that survive folding. For women, silk-look polyester blends from Theory or equipment handle travel exceptionally well.

2 pairs of dress trousers or tailored pants — one dark, one lighter. If your industry is casual, well-fitted chinos substitute.

1 blazer — this gets worn on the plane, hung immediately on arrival. A wool-blend blazer in navy or charcoal works with everything.

1 pair of dark jeans — for casual dinners or Friday meetings where the dress code relaxes.

4–5 undershirts or base layers — these are invisible but critical. Bring enough for every day.

4–5 pairs of socks and underwear — merino wool socks take two days to smell and dry overnight.

Shoes

1 pair of dress shoes (worn on the plane). Choose leather or leather-look loafers — they work for meetings and dinner, TSA slip-off easily, and don't take up bag space.

1 pair of comfortable walking shoes or sneakers — for evenings, weekend extensions, and airport transit.

The wrinkle trick

Hang everything immediately on arrival. Steam from the shower removes 80% of travel wrinkles. A travel steamer the size of a water bottle removes the rest in two minutes.

Tech Packing

Business travel means more tech. Keep it organized or you'll spend ten minutes every morning finding cables.

Essentials:

  • Laptop (goes in the dedicated compartment, never in the main bag)
  • Laptop charger + universal adapter
  • Phone charger — USB-C GaN chargers charge everything
  • Portable battery (10,000 mAh handles two full phone charges)
  • Noise-cancelling headphones — AirPods Pro or Sony XM5 are the standard
  • Mouse (if you present or work in spreadsheets for hours)

Keep cables in a dedicated pouch. Every cable in the same place, every time. This is not optional.

Toiletries

You're at hotels all week. Most things are provided.

What hotels reliably provide: shampoo, conditioner, body wash, lotion, hair dryer.

What you need to bring: your specific face wash, moisturiser, deodorant, toothbrush and paste, razor, any prescription items.

Decant everything into 100ml bottles. A good toiletry kit with elastic loops and a hanging hook keeps everything visible and accessible.

Documents and Wallet

Keep your passport, boarding passes, and frequently needed cards in one accessible pocket — not buried in your main compartment. A slim travel wallet prevents the ten-second fumble at every checkpoint.

The Night Before Protocol

Pack everything the night before. Lay out the next day's outfit. Know where your laptop, phone charger, and boarding pass are. Business travel stress comes almost entirely from morning chaos that could have been resolved at 10pm.

Frequent travelers don't pack better — they have a system they repeat without thinking.
